Self Practice: Living your Core Values
About a week ago I met Johnny, a student from a local high school nearby. I asked him whether he has heard of the term "core values" and if he has some core values as a young lad. Johnny answered he has heard the word couple of times but just don't understand what it really meant. Well, I think many of us can relate to Johnny's situation. We tend to overlook certain minute things which in the long run can significantly impact our lives.
Introduction
Having and living by your core values is the first step to finding your true self and continual inner growth. Core values refer to the most important beliefs of a person. Values are the ideas that you esteem to be of great worth and importance which give your life structure.
Importance of defining your core values
According to Brett Mckay, in his book 30 days to a Better Man, these are four (4) importance of clearly defining your core values:
1. Defining your values gives you purpose:
When you don't know or haven't clearly defined your values, you end up drifting along in life. You do not base your decisions on an internal compass hence you make decisions and choices based on circumstances and social pressures as well as trying to fulfill the expectations of others instead of your own.
2. Defining your core values prevents you from making bad choices:
Just as giving you direction and purpose in life, clearly defining your core values prevents you from making choices that conflict with your own values. On the other hand, without defining your values, you end up making bad choices that conflict with your values. This brings imbalance between your actions and your thoughts leading to unhappiness and frustrations. It is true "the conscience reveals what we refuse to see as wrong deeds."
3. Defining your values gives you confidence:
When you have well defined values to govern your internal compass, you are more likely to have the courage and confidence to make decisions and choices based on those values.
4.Defining your values makes life simpler:
Finally, clearly defining your core values makes your life much more simpler. when you are sure of your core values, making decisions become much simpler. When faced with a choice, you simply ask yourself, "does this action align with my values?" If it does, you do it. If it doesn't, you don't. When faced with uncertainty or dilemma, you simply let your internal compass guide you.
Well, that's it for today. See you soon for the next phase of your journey to become the best version of yourself.
